21.10.25
On 17 October, Lauma Vizule-Kahovska, a representative of the LIFE IS SALACA project, took part in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve Young Rangers seminar, where she introduced young people to the quality of Latvia’s fresh waters, habitats and the project’s activities.
The North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve Young Rangers movement has been active since 2018. The Young Rangers are more than 30 young people from Salacgrīva, Rencēni and Viļķene. Through the Young Rangers movement, young people gain an understanding of nature conservation and develop a positive attitude towards the environment and specially protected nature areas.
The NVBR Young Rangers meet regularly at seminars and take part in research and citizen monitoring. They pay special attention to the Salaca River – studying water quality, taking part in clean-ups and educating the local community at public events such as Lamprey Day and other events organised by the NVBR Nature Centre.
On 17 October, Lauma Vizule-Kahovska, a representative of the LIFE IS SALACA project, took part in the Young Rangers seminar and talked about Latvia’s fresh waters, their quality and main problems, habitats of EU importance and natural rarities, the activities of the LIFE IS SALACA project and the rapids restoration measures.
At the end, participants had the chance to test their knowledge in the Kahoot game In the same boat with LIFE IS SALACA and win useful prizes.
The project’s cooperation with the Young Rangers, who take part in educational and volunteer activities, is important both for involving the younger generation in nature conservation and for strengthening the sustainability of the LIFE IS SALACA project by encouraging cooperation with the local community.
