World Water Day – a reminder of one of the most important resources on Earth
22.03.26
Every year on 22 March, World Water Day is celebrated around the world to draw public attention to the importance of water in people’s lives and to promote the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The day serves as a reminder that water is not just a natural resource – it is the foundation of life, ensuring public health, economic development and the balance of ecosystems.
World Water Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992 and was first celebrated in 1993. Since then, it has become an important international initiative calling on countries, organisations and society as a whole to pay more attention to the protection, availability and sustainable use of water resources.
The main aim of World Water Day is not only to highlight the importance of water but also to draw attention to the global water crisis. Despite technological development and growing environmental awareness, billions of people still do not have access to safe drinking water. It is estimated that more than 2.1 billion people in the world live without safe access to quality drinking water, which affects their health as well as social and economic development.
World Water Day invites everyone to recognise that water is not an inexhaustible resource. Because of climate change, pollution and excessive water consumption, more and more regions face water shortages. That is why it is particularly important to take care of preserving water resources at both global and local level.
In everyday life, each of us can contribute to saving and protecting water. For example, by taking a shower instead of a bath, turning off the tap while brushing our teeth, fixing water leaks at home and using water wisely when watering the garden. It is also important not to pollute the environment – not to pour chemicals or medicines down the drain and to sort waste.
World Water Day is an opportunity for everyone to think about the impact of their daily habits on the environment. Saving water, reducing pollution, protecting natural resources and educating the public are essential steps to ensure that clean and safe water will also be available to future generations.
