Every year in May, Natura 2000 Day is celebrated across Europe – an initiative that draws public attention to the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity. In Latvia, too, this day is becoming increasingly important, inviting residents to discover unique natural areas and recognise their value for future generations.
Natura 2000 is the European Union’s network of protected areas, which aims to preserve rare and threatened species and habitats. In Latvia, 333 sites are currently included in the Natura 2000 network, covering a wide range of areas – from strict nature reserves and national parks to protected marine areas. The “Salacas ieleja” (Salaca Valley) Nature Park is also one of Latvia’s Natura 2000 sites.
This year, various events are taking place in Latvia as part of Natura 2000 Day. On Friday, 22 May, the Nature Conservation Agency is also holding Nature Day in Sigulda, around Gūtmaņala cave. The event highlights this year’s nature symbols and biodiversity, bringing together the country’s leading nature researchers – the species’ official “godparents”. Various discovery stations at the event will offer a many-sided view of nature – visitors will be able not only to smell the blossom and bark of the bird cherry, the Tree of the Year, but also to play detective while studying slime moulds, look into the Habitat of the Year – a tree cavity – and get to know the bird of the year, the Eurasian scops owl, more closely. The event will also feature exciting activities from the nature centres of the Agency’s national parks, the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve and the National Botanic Garden, the Latvian Young Rangers movement and the “LIFE IS SALACA” project.
In the first part of the event, the 15 most knowledgeable school classes in Latvia, who won their place in the competition “Nature Day – 2026 nature symbols”, will enjoy an exclusive nature discovery experience, while from 15:00 to 16:00 the unique discovery stations will be open to everyone, inviting families and nature lovers to talk directly with researchers and scientists.
Natura 2000 Day reminds us that nature is not just a resource but our shared home. Preserving it is a matter not only of the environment but also of the well-being of society.
