The Latvian State Forestry Institute “Silava”, together with several cooperating organisations, is implementing a five-year project in the rivers of the Salaca sub-basin with the aim of promoting the achievement of good ecological water quality and a favourable protection status of freshwater habitats, as required by the Water Framework Directive, the Habitats Directive and the EU Biodiversity Strategy.

The project foresees the implementation of practical management measures and the development of planning documents with the aim of improving the quality of the rivers in the Salaca sub-basin and preserving natural values in the long term, as well as the transfer of knowledge and best practices to the public and experts in the field.
