For forest owners on the banks of the Svētupe, Korģe and Glāžupe rivers

11.03.24

On 1 October 2023, the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava” launched the European Union Environment and LIFE Programme and the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund of the State Regional Development Agency “Harmonisation of the Water Framework Directive and the Habitats Directive and implementation of integrated management measures to improve freshwater quality in the Salaca (LIFE IS SALACA)”.

The project is implemented in cooperation with:
Nature Conservation Agency, Institute of Food safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR”, State Limited Liability Company “Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology”, the “Fishing Club “Salackrasti””.  The main objective of the project is to promote good water status as defined by the Water Framework Directive (WFD), Habitats Directive (HD) and the EU Biodiversity Strategy.

In order to achieve the main objective of the project, the project foresees the following main activities:

  1. Harmonisation of the Habitats Directive and the Water Framework Directive in the model area – the Salaca sub catchment.
  2. Development of a new framework for the nature management plan of the Natura 2000 site “Salaca Valley”.
  3. Improving the availability, quantity and quality of habitats for ecologically sensitive fish species.
  4. Management of upland forests.
  5. Application of ecosystem services valuation in land use modelling.

Within the framework of the activity “Management of riparian forests”, please contact the owners of riparian forests – Svētupe, Glāžupe and Korģe (from the mouth of the Salaca River to the Limbaži – Salacgrīva road), whose properties contain plots with the following features:

  1. dominant tree species white alder (desirable, but not mandatory);
  2. the plot is located in a 50 metre strip along the river bank.

As part of the project, we will offer to cover the owner’s share of the harvesting costs and all silvicultural costs for the reforestation and establishment of new forest for 4 years.
