On lamprey fishing on the Salaca

23.05.25

On 23 May, Kaspars Abersons and Patrīcija Raibarte, representatives of the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR”, interviewed Limbaži Municipality about the organisation of lamprey fishing on the Salaca River. The aim of the interview is to gather the views of the parties involved in lamprey fishing in order to reach a solution acceptable to all parties for organising lamprey fishing.

The solution will be included in the nature conservation plan for the Natura 2000 site – the “Salacas ieleja” (Salaca Valley) Nature Park – which will be prepared within LIFE project No. 101114155 “Adaptation of Water Framework Directive and Habitats Directive harmonization and integrated actions for freshwater quality improvement in Salaca river sub catchment” (LIFE IS SALACA).

On behalf of the municipality, the interview was attended by Dagnis Straubergs, Chairman of the Limbaži Municipality Council, Andris Zunde, head of the Salacgrīva unit, customer service specialist Ārija Mikša and environmental engineer Iveta Umule. During the interview, Dagnis Straubergs pointed out the need to reduce bureaucracy in situations where the placement of fishing gear has to be changed because the weir has been damaged, to establish a precise definition and status for lamprey fishing gear, and to clearly define the conditions for building and maintaining lamprey weirs.
